Types of Bikes
There are four main types of bike that you can buy, which can also be used for a cycling based camping holiday:

Mountain Bikes - originally made to go along rough mountain tracks, they have larger tyres with lots of grip, wide handlebars and lots of gears. These bikes are easy to ride and are ideal for using on rough ground.
Road Bikes / Racer Bikes – these bikes are generally very light and are made for speed cycling. They have very thin tyres, drop handlebars and is not ideal for tough terrains.
Touring Bikes - these bikes look almost the same as racing bikes but the difference is that they are stronger and can carry loads such as lightweight tents and camping equipment.
Hybrid Bikes - these bikes are designed as a middle ground between Mountain Bikes and Road Bikes, with a combination of speed and durability.

The great thing about cycling is it can be enjoyed individually or as a family event. Moms, dads and the kids can all enjoy being active together, just make sure you have the right equipment.
Here are some bikes & equipments for when you have the little ones:
Child trailers are mini trailers that are towed behind the bike, giving your chile a nice chauffeured cycle. These trailers also protect your children from the sun, rain and wind.
Baby and Child Seats can be fitted to the back or front of an adult bike and allow you to carry small children. A child is old enough for a child seat when able to sit up unsupported.
Tag-a-long bikes are single wheeled bikes that clamp to the back of an adult bike allowing the child to be towed. These devices are a great way to teach your child how to ride as well as the rules of the road.
Tandem bikes are basically long bikes with two seats. There are child versions with the rear seat being set for children. For older kids or adults there are adult tandems available and these can be lots of fun.

Once your child reaches 8 years or so, they will be able to ride a fair distance on their own bike. There are a range of bikes available for children with all the features of adult bikes such as gears and hi-tech brakes.

Lastly, be sure to follow the road rules and wear bright clothing when cycling. Helmets are compulsory, and night riders must affix a light to their bikes and wear reflective clothing.
